I am not big into horror movies and some may say that Happy Death Day is not really one, it is
more like suspense. However, I enjoyed watching this movie. What is so
incredible about this film is that it had a low budget and an amazing piece of
work came out of that. I also recently found out that this movie was made by
the same person, Jason Blum, who did Get
Out and Split and I love those
two. I was watching Screen Junkies on YouTube
and they said something I totally agreed with. That is if you get a good director/producer
on the film, a good story, and not a big budget then there is a better chance
the film is going to be good or even one of the best films of the year. When
you give people a bunch of money they just waste it on the top actors and
actresses of Hollywood and on special effects that take away from what the film
is about.
The only question I had that kept running through my
head was why Tree (main character) got the chance to find out who killed her repeatedly.
Cause she was not a good person before and though her mother died, that does
not give who any excuses. I am not one for sympathy. I wish that was told in
the movie, but it does give it a bit of mystery and allows you to interpret it
yourself.
Something I though was well done was that throughout
the film she kept on repeatedly dying but they didn’t show all the gore and
stuff. But also, it was very comedic. The story was about something horrible
happening to someone, but I could not help it but laugh through it all due to
the main characters’ reactions to what was happening.
So, I watched this movie with my mom and she could guess
right in the beginning who the killer was; the roommate. It was so obvious but
not obvious at the same time. Like usually the killer or whoever the antagonist
is, is the person you least expect and would point out last. But sometimes it’s
that person who is kind of too obvious, which is the roommate and the writers
of the film wanted you to turn your attention to someone else. The roommate was
being too nice in the beginning; she kind of turned in herself from the start.
I liked the tiny relationship sparking between Tree
and Carter. The one time when Carter got his neck broken I freaked out for a
second but then she died again which put my heart back together. Everyone knows
you get upset when a person who was just trying to help or did nothing at all
gets killed for no reason, Barb and Bob from Stranger Things for example. Back to their relationship, I thought
it was cute. The whole time I was trying to figure out where I have seen Carter
before. Looked it up and he was in The
Bling Ring and Perfect High.
I mean there is not much more I have to say about it. It
was cool how each time she repeated the day I was remembering also every event that
occurred, like a was a psychic or something. Also, the studio saved money on outfits
cause all the actors almost wore the exact outfit each time.
All in all, enjoyable movie. Going to buy it when it
goes to DVD in the store.
I hope everyone has a Happy Death Day! (figuratively; don’t
really die. But if you do, do die happy)
