I was finally able to get to watching some of the
Oscar nominated movies of 2018. The first one I got to watch was The Shape of Water which to me was just
a lovely story set in 1962 Baltimore, following a mute custodian at a
high-security government laboratory who befriends a captured humanoid-amphibian creature. It gave me The Little Mermaid
vibes and Ariel is my favorite Disney princess. Except in this case the girl is
human and becomes a sea creature instead of the other way around.
I enjoyed this movie use of a mute person, which
allowed you to see the physical chemistry between the animal and Elisa. But I
will mention that the scene where they have sex kind of creeps me out. Though
anyone should be able to be with who they want to be, it still grossed me out.
Also, why did Elisa assume a towel by the door was going to stop water from
coming out of the bathroom????
My favorite aspect of this movie though was the
soundtrack/score. Though most of was in French, so I didn’t understand it,
nonetheless it was beautiful. Next time I’m studying for a test I will be
clicking on this album to listen too.
Though the protagonist is an amazing character, the
supporting actors are always my favorite. Especially Giles, played by Richard
Jenkins who was hilarious to me throughout and whose drawings were amazing.
Though I did get a Stranger Things
vibe when the creature ate cat. Elisa brought in a strange creature like Dustin
did, and wide up allowing that creature to eat a house pet. What a coincidence.
As usual I loved Octavia Spencer because she’s Octavia
Spencer of course.
This film was wonderful to watch and told an amazing
love story with wonderful characters, music, and dialect. I would very must
recommend this movie. However, I don’t think it should win Best Picture at the
2018 Oscars.
